The 1980 Annual Gathering of American Mensa, Cable Car AG, was held in San Francisco, California at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. It lasted from June 26 through June 29. There were 1050 attendees. Elna Tymes was the AG chairman.

In a copyrighted story by Tymes, distributed as a flyer at the subsequent 1992 San Francisco AG, she recounted that the 20th anniversary of American Mensa was commemorated during the 1980 AG with a cake and champagne festivity after the Saturday dinner. As a humorous gimmick, they decided to have a gorilla jump out of the cake and grab a girl (a pre-arranged accomplice) from the audience and strip her clothing off (where there was supposed to be a body stocking beneath so there was no actual indecent exposure). However, this didn't go quite as planned, as the participants decided (without knowledge by the AG committee) to "jazz" things up a bit, ending up doing an act with actual full nudity (both of the girl and of the "gorilla" who took off his costume revealing nothing beneath), which was rather extreme for AG entertainment even by San Francisco standards. Fortunately, nobody was arrested.
