The 1983 Annual Gathering of American Mensa, AZAG / Frontiers Old & New, was held in Phoenix, Arizona at the Phoenix Hilton / Hyatt Regency. It lasted from June 15 through June 19. There were 850 attendees. Cindy Cielle was the AG chairman.
In a famous incident, the tour bus broke down during one of the side trips connected with the gathering, leaving a group of Mensans stranded in the desert until a new bus could be sent. They responded creatively by "founding" the fictional town of Broken Wheel, Arizona. This would be reprised in skits at later AGs, including a "radio show" called Desert Home Companion which was an homage to Prairie Home Companion.
