The 2006 World Gathering was held at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Walt Disney World, near Orlando, Florida, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Mensa. The Annual Gathering of American Mensa was combined into this gathering along with a meeting of the International Board of Directors, and it attracted Mensans from around the world, with the attendance of 2242 the highest of any Mensa gathering to date. Elissa Rudolph was the chairman of the World Gathering 2006 committee, which was independent of any local group.

The gathering was held from August 8th through 13th, which is later than the usual dates of the American AG. In order to hold the Annual Business Meeting of American Mensa at this gathering, the bylaws of American Mensa had to be amended to extend the range of dates during which the ABM was to be held.

As the third straight U.S. AG held in what is regarded as a "destination city", this gathering provoked some discussion and debate about the desirability of such locations versus less attractive (but less expensive) ones. There were also concerns about the possibility of skimpy hospitality food, a la Las Vegas, due to strict rules of Disney properties, but the official Web site promised "a full choice of drinks and plenty of snacks of all types."[1]

Registration and hotel fees

Registration for the 2006 WG was $60 by 7/31/2005; $80 for members, $90 for nonmembers by 5/15/2006; $100 for members, $110 for nonmembers by 7/31/06; $120 after. Young Mensans were free up to age 3, $30 for ages 4 to 12, $40 for ages 13 to 17, $50 for ages 18-20. There was a 3-meal dining plan for $148. The hotel room rate was $119.
