2010 Joint Annual Gathering of American Mensa and Mensa Canada
The 2010 Annual Gathering of American Mensa, "AGroovin in Motown", was held as a joint gathering with Mensa Canada near Detroit, Michigan (actually in Dearborn) from June 30th through July 5 at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn hotel (with the Henry and Doubletree hotels as overflow hotels) as a joint gathering with Mensa Canada. Maria Sawczuk was the chair, and attendance was 1825. The local tourist bureau made mention of this gathering in its advertising as part of its attempt to dispel the negative reputation of Detroit, saying that a bunch of "geniuses" picked that city as a place to gather.
Events included a talk by the last surviving crew member of the Enola Gay, a lingerie fashion show, and a tour group going to see a Detroit Tigers baseball game. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Mensa in North America, some historical photographs were exhibited near the hospitality room and in a film shown after the banquet.
About 500 books were collected from attendees to donate to Friends of the Detroit Library, and almost 4100 pounds of food for Forgotten Harvest of Oak Park, Michigan.
The main and overflow hotels surrounded a shopping mall.
