Birthday of Kim Jong-il Heir 'to Become National Holiday'

Korean Unit in Afghanistan Hit in Artillery Attack, No Casua

Samsung to Spend $7 Billion in Memory Chip Plant in China

Samsung Electronics will build its semiconductor plant in the northwestern city of Xian, China. Appeal of Imported Cars Keeps Rising

Hyundai and Kia are worried that they may have to surrender some 20 percent of their Korean market share to imported brands in the long term unless they can reverse the trend this year.

Domestic automakers plan to compete with imports on price. Hyundai-Kia have slashed the prices of five major models -- the Sonata, Genesis, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, and Veracruz -- by up to W1 million (US$1=W1,064) with the start of the New Year without reducing the available features.




The appeal of imported cars to Koreans remains on the increase. Their market share exceeded 10 percent for the first time last year and is expected to rise to 11.5 percent this year.

How did their market share double in just five years? First of all, luxury car brands such Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus, played a big role. They succeeded in attracting traditional customers of domestic large sedans like the Grandeur and Genesis with a more affordable and various range of cars.

The second factor has been the availability of more smaller cars from Volkswagen, BMW Mini and Toyota.

In December last year, Volkswagen ranked top ahead of the Benz and BMW in terms of sales. It will introduce the Polo supermini car with a 1.2 to 1.4 liter engine in the second quarter, challenging the Korean market with the smallest engine capacity of all imported models.

Brothers' Battle for Labor Leadership in Britain

Britain's Labor Party has selected a new leader, Ed Miliband. The decision was made after a tense leadership bid that saw two brothers pitted against each other for the top job.

Confronted with criticism from members of his own party, the president called the last-minute briefing with White House reporters today to explain that if he hadn't compromised, middle-class families would've also seen their tax cuts go away at the end of the month. "This is their holy grail, these tax cuts for the wealthy. This is -- seems to be their central economic doctrine. And so, unless we had 60 votes in the Senate at any given time, it would be very hard for us to move this forward.”

Before the briefing, a group of congressional GOP leaders said the president made the right decision. Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said tax cuts for those making more than 250,000 dollars a year will go a long way to creating jobs.

"The best thing we can do right now to make it easier and cheaper to create private sector jobs is not to raise taxes on people who create jobs and on the American working people.”

But critics say this deal will cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars without any guarantee enough jobs will be created to bring down the unemployment rate. And they say it's a fight President Obama and his party will have to again face when cuts are due to expire in two years.

Investigative hearings into the BP Gulf oil spill are underway in Huston, on the Deepwater Horizon accident to be specific. 's Jeff Brady says, this is the sixth public hearing into the Deepwater Horizon case jointly conducted by the US Coast Guard and the Department of the Interior.

A British judge is denying bail to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is fighting extradition to Sweden where he faces sex crimes charges. US and other governments condemn the leaks as irresponsible, but Assange's supporters say the public has a right to know.

Jamie and Frank McCourt have argued for more than a year in divorce court about whether one or both of them owns the Los Angeles Dodgers. NPR’s Karen Grigsby Bates reports, a new ruling has settled that question but opened others.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon ruled on Tuesday morning that the marital property agreement the McCourts signed "is not valid or enforceable". That means the Dodgers may be considered part of the couple’s mutual assets, which almost certainly means more court time. As each McCourt indicated they would appeal if the ruling went against their interests. The next question: Will the team have to be sold in an effort to divide the McCourt's assets fairly?
