Appeal of Imported Cars Keeps Rising

Hyundai and Kia are worried that they may have to surrender some 20 percent of their Korean market share to imported brands in the long term unless they can reverse the trend this year.

Domestic automakers plan to compete with imports on price. Hyundai-Kia have slashed the prices of five major models -- the Sonata, Genesis, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, and Veracruz -- by up to W1 million (US$1=W1,064) with the start of the New Year without reducing the available features.

The appeal of imported cars to Koreans remains on the increase. Their market share exceeded 10 percent for the first time last year and is expected to rise to 11.5 percent this year.

How did their market share double in just five years? First of all, luxury car brands such Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus, played a big role. They succeeded in attracting traditional customers of domestic large sedans like the Grandeur and Genesis with a more affordable and various range of cars.

The second factor has been the availability of more smaller cars from Volkswagen, BMW Mini and Toyota.

In December last year, Volkswagen ranked top ahead of the Benz and BMW in terms of sales. It will introduce the Polo supermini car with a 1.2 to 1.4 liter engine in the second quarter, challenging the Korean market with the smallest engine capacity of all imported models.

Brothers' Battle for Labor Leadership in Britain

Britain's Labor Party has selected a new leader, Ed Miliband. The decision was made after a tense leadership bid that saw two brothers pitted against each other for the top job.

Losing candidate former Foreign Minister David Miliband spoke at the Labor Party Conference in Britain on Monday. "I am so proud of my campaign, I am so proud of vanessa bruno pas cher my party, but above all I am incredibly proud of my brother," he said.

It was a tight race for the Labor leadership. Five people were fighting for the top seat, but by the end of campaigning it had become clear that there were really on two possible winners -- David or Ed Miliband.

David Miliband was Foreign Secretary until the Labor Party lost power earlier this year. In Britain he is the better known of the two brothers and was initially favored to win.

But in the vanessa bruno end his younger brother beat him with a margin of just more than one percent.

Speaking on Saturday, the new Labor leader Ed vanessa bruno soldes Miliband paid tribute to his brother. "David, I love you so much as a brother," he says, "and I have so much vanessa bruno sac extraordinary respect for the campaign that you ran."

Tony Travers is from Britain's London School of Economics. He says the two brothers' campaign became increasingly tense towards the end of the leadership contest.

"They are close as brothers and I think it has been slightly traumatic, particularly the race to the finish bit of the leadership race. And obviously it will take a bit of time for wounds to heal although I suspect, as in most families, they will," Travers said.

The Labor Party was in power for 13 years, first under the premiership vanessa bruno cabas of Tony Blair and then Gordon Brown, who stepped down as leader after Labor failed to win the general election earlier this year. Britain is now run by a coalition government led by Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. vanessa bruno pas cher

Travers says Ed Miliband is considered a left-wing party member. He has called for a move away from so-called New Labor, a movement that catapulted Labor into power during the 1990s by repositioning it as a more centrist party.

But Traverse says it is unclear in what way Ed Miliband will steer the party. "The British electorate needs to see what he stands for and what his real policies will be," he said. "Just because he was supported as the left wing of the two brothers does not mean that he is now bound to stick there."

David Miliband has not yet said what are his future plans. Forty-year-old Ed Miliband is to speak at the Labor Party Conference on Tuesday.

President Obama is standing by his decision jordan doernbecher to give the GOP what it wanted - Bush-era tax cut extensions for the wealthiest Americans. Confronted with criticism from members of his own party, the president called the last-minute briefing with White House reporters today to explain that if he hadn't compromised, middle-class families would've also seen their tax cuts go away at the end of the month. The president said the Republican leadership just wouldn't budge.

"This is their holy grail, these tax cuts for the wealthy. This is -- seems to be their central economic doctrine. And so, unless we had 60 votes in the Senate at any given time, it would be very hard for us to move this forward.”

Before the briefing, a group of congressional GOP leaders said the president made the right decision. Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said tax cuts for those making more than 250,000 dollars a year will go a long way to creating jobs.

"The best thing we can do right now to make it easier and cheaper to create private sector jobs is not to raise taxes on people who create jobs and on the American working people.”

But critics say this deal will cost taxpayers tens of billions of dollars without any guarantee enough jobs will be created to bring down the unemployment rate. And they say it's a fight President Obama and his party will have to again face when cuts are due to expire in two years.

Investigative hearings into the BP Gulf oil spill are underway in Huston, on the Deepwater Horizon accident to be specific. 's Jeff Brady says, this is the sixth public hearing into the Deepwater Horizon case jointly conducted by the US Coast Guard and the Department of the Interior.

While investigators have conducted exhaustive questioning of witnesses, they haven't made public any of their preliminary conclusions like the president's spill commission has. During hearings this week, the panel will question mudloggers. They jordan oreo are responsible for alerting rig workers when gas levels in drilling mud are too high. The Coast Guard and Interior Department are expected to hold one more set of hearings, and the agencies are still waiting for forensic test results on a key piece of evidence. That's the blowout preventer that failed to stop the Macondo well from spewing millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. When a final report is issued, the agencies are expected to conclude what caused the explosion and what could be done to prevent a jordan noir similar accident in the future. Jeff Brady, News.

Oil prices topped 90 dollars a barrel today for the first time in more than two years. The jump is sending fuel prices higher. Analysts say cost may reach a national average of three dollars a gallon before Christmas.

Jamie and Frank McCourt have argued for more than a year in divorce court about whether one or both of them owns the Los Angeles Dodgers. NPR’s Karen Grigsby Bates reports, a new ruling has settled that question but opened others.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon ruled on Tuesday morning that the marital property agreement the McCourts signed "is not valid or enforceable". That means the Dodgers may be considered part of the couple’s mutual assets, which almost certainly means more court time. As each McCourt indicated they would appeal if the ruling went against their interests. The next question: Will the team have to be sold in an effort to divide the McCourt's assets fairly?
