Vandalia Mensa was organized in the summer of 1981 as an active West Virginia alternative to an existing administration. The group's then principal activity was an annual gathering ("Wildwood Romp") held at a Boy Scouts of America camp in Pocahontas County, attended by many American Mensa "poobahs" for a number of years. That gathering was suspended in the '90s with the change in the Ranger and subsequent deterioration of the site. The newsletter ("Mensanear") created by the initial Local Secretary sustained ongoing criticism of the "politics of Mensa" for the first five years of publication.
