The Mensa Educational and Research Foundation (formerly generally referred to as MERF, but currently preferring to be called "the Foundation") is a separately-incorporated nonprofit organization associated with but legally separate from American Mensa. It operates the Mensa scholarship competition, runs colloquiums, and publishes the Mensa Research Journal. The Foundation owns the building that contains the American Mensa National Office, and collects rent from it. Other funding sources include auctions, raffles, and other such fundraisers at gatherings.
